Day 986 Flowers and Candy
Fresh flowers and a big bowl of candy seem to be a staple for every springtime tabletop. After all the Easter festivities, we may be eating candy for the next two months... not that I'm complaining! I'm one of those people who always has bowls of candy around—it's a must for my living room, kitchen, and dining room.
I think it's one of my favorite things about being a grown-up: I can eat candy whenever I want... and I do. I've always been a candy monger. When I was little, I used to behave in church knowing that if I did, we’d stop at the store after Mass and I’d get a quarter to spend on penny candy. Holidays and the occasional Bridge Club Nights were always extra special, knowing I’d get my fix of sweet treats.
Now it seems like every day is filled with them—chocolates, gummies, caramel creams, and whatever else catches my eye in the stores. Only one of my kids inherited my sweet tooth, so for the most part, my treats were safe when they were little. My grandkids, though—that’s another story. They sneak into the living room to raid the candy dish every chance they get. But isn’t that part of what makes Grammy’s house fun?
The fresh flowers are harder to maintain—cut flowers have such a short life but are so pretty. Fortunately, I’ve got daffodils, hyacinths, and forsythia blooming in my yard, so bringing in a bunch is easy. Spring may be in the air, and nicer weather is heading our way, but the darn wind has been keeping the temps cooler. The forecast keeps telling me it's going to be warm, but I haven’t felt it yet.
Still, even with the chill in the air, there's something so nice about the way spring slowly sneaks in—kind of like my grandkids with the candy.
