Day 1006 Mother's Day

Mother’s Day also marked the final day of our visit, and boy, did we pack in as much as humanly possible! After a leisurely breakfast, morning walks, and some cheerful conversation, we set off for a BBQ lunch before hitting the mini golf course.

BBQ in Virginia is a whole different experience—absolutely delicious and nothing like anything I’ve had in New England. It was a feast of bold flavors and smoky goodness. Mini golf was a hit, too. I got in for free (a reward for moms on Mother's Day), and it turns out I’m not as bad at it as I thought. Who knew? But can you really be good or bad at mini golf? With all the trick shots and winding tunnels, I’d say luck plays a pretty big role. We laughed our way through 18 holes of hills, curves, trick shots, water dunks and surprises.

Afterward, we headed to the Yorktown Riverwalk—a popular spot with a sandy riverside “beach,” charming shops, and inviting restaurants. We strolled along the water, took some photos, browsed a few stores, and then agreed it was time to return home for one last round of games.

Thankfully, our flight wasn’t until the evening, so we had the whole afternoon to relax. Still, the time flew by. Before we knew it, our bags were packed and we were heading to the airport. Richmond is a great little airport—easy to navigate and very friendly—so we zipped through security and made it to our gate with time to spare.

In a funny twist of fate, I ran into a friend I’d seen on the flight down—turns out she was on our return flight too! My son and I had somehow been assigned separate seats, but my friend happened to be sitting next to him and kindly offered to switch with me so he and I could sit together.  Don’t you just love when the universe (and a friendly face) smiles on you?

Our flight was a short one—just over an hour—and though brief, it gave my son and me a chance to share some uninterrupted conversation. Tim was waiting to pick us up, and since the flight was delayed by half an hour, my friend hitched a ride too—saving both our husbands from a late-night airport run.

All in all, it was a perfect Mother’s Day—one for the books. As we drove home, my youngest and I already missed my older son and agreed: we need to visit more often. Family time is more precious than anything and this trip reminded me just how much joy (and action) can be packed into a single day.

Here’s to more moments like these and to never waiting too long between visits.
