Day 1013 Lazy Days

Sunday morning, fruit was sliced, ready and waiting for my grandsons as they slept. I held off cooking bacon and eggs until they woke up—and I’m glad I did. Teenage and pre-teen boys sure can sleep late. They both finally made it downstairs just before 10:30 a.m., sat long enough to fill their bellies, then were off again—one back to bed, the other off to play golf.

It’s amazing how quickly they grow up. Gone are the lazy days of reading stories, playing with Play-Doh, and walking down to the playground for fun. I baked strawberry cupcakes for a birthday celebration for my granddaughter, so everyone rolled back in after dinner for cake, ice cream, and a game or two. Time seems to fly by so quickly, especially when it comes to grandchildren.

Tim and I were on duty all day. Although the boys were mostly off doing their own thing, we stayed within range in case we were needed. When my daughter and son-in-law arrived home and thanked us for taking care of the boys, I felt a bit unworthy of their gratitude. We hadn’t done much—but both boys were fed, safe and sound for the night, and driven wherever they needed to go. I suppose that counts for something.

Tim and I aren't usually home all day on a Sunday, so the change of pace was good for us. We got a little weeding done, sat in the sun when it peeked out, and attended to weekend chores in a leisurely fashion.

As the house settled into quiet again, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the chaos, the cupcakes, and the company. These are the moments that make up a life—simple, fleeting, and full of love.
