Day 1025 Atlantis Rising
The Atlantis Rising international sand sculpture event at Ninigret Park left me in awe—and with lots of questions. Like, how on earth do you become a sand sculpture artist? Is this their main job? Do they get sponsors to travel and compete? Imagine traveling from all corners of the globe to compete in little Rhode Island! Had they ever heard of Rhode Island before? How did little Rhody even make it onto the international map?
With all these questions rattling around in my brain, I tried my best to simply enjoy the stunning creations. The event was a lot of fun—there were food trucks, great live music, crafts, and friends—but the weather definitely could have cooperated more. We were downright cold, all of us pretending we were fine while secretly shivering.
Unfortunately, the forecast for the weekend isn't looking any better. Hopefully, the artists will get at least one day of sunshine—it would be such a shame for all their hard work to go unnoticed due to low attendance.
Once the band wrapped up and we were chilled to the bone, we bailed and headed to Donna and Dave’s house. Now, we all know I’m not a fan of big dogs, and theirs came rushing to greet me—causing me a good deal of stress. I know how much they love their dog, and I respect that. Still, it’s hard for dog lovers to understand how intense it can feel for someone who’s not comfortable around them. Imagine someone who’s terrified of snakes walking into a house and having one dropped in their lap!
Donna should know how much I adore her—because I keep coming back, even when it means getting jumped on and slobbered on at the door.
In the end, Atlantis Rising was worth seeing—not just for the amazing art, but also for the summer vibes in the cold. Here’s hoping next year brings warmer weather and just as much wonder.
