Day 1035 Early Bird

They say the early bird gets the worm… but I’m starting to think it’s more likely the aggressive bird that gets it. Either way, there’s something special about being up early, hitting the day running, and soaking in every minute of the sunrise. Maybe that’s why I love my chickens so much—on those quiet mornings, they remind me I’m not the only one awake.

My boys still laugh at me for once saying, “Chickens aren’t a lot of work.” To clarify: it’s not work if you love it! All pets require effort. Take Peps, for example—constantly asking to go outside, only to be back at the door moments later. But we love her all the same.

Yes, chickens need to be fed morning and evening. There are long nights spent chasing off predators and noisy daybreaks filled with their chatter—but that’s just part of the deal. And when I open the door and they come running to greet me, excited to see what treat I might have for them, it’s all completely worth it.

I’ve been selling their eggs to a few friends this year, so I won’t have the usual overwhelming surplus. One friend even requested five dozen the other day—clearly an egg lover! The chickens are thrilled it's finally spring and are having a blast foraging through the fresh weeds, grasses, and tiny bugs that are beginning to emerge.

There’s a quiet rhythm to mornings like these—full of purpose, connection, and a little chaos. And honestly, I wouldn't trade it for anything.
