Day 1049 Bright
My beautiful flowers from Tory’s shower are brightening up my dining room. I used the pretty new pitcher that Missy and Erica gave me for my birthday—it's so darn cute it deserves to be used more than just for breakfast beverages.
I'm a bit surprised the flowers aren't wilting in this heat, as we're currently in the middle of a heat wave! Tim and I can hardly believe it was only a week ago that we had a fire going in the pellet stove. Now we’re looking at 100-degree temperatures and scrambling to get the A/C units into the windows. We're such a climate-controlled society these days.
Back in the day (cue my old lady rant), we never had A/C units. We were lucky if we even had a fan to cool us down. I remember sleeping in brutally hot temperatures as a kid, and if you wanted to cool off in the car, you’d crank the window down and hope for a breeze. The next generation would find that completely unacceptable—they’ve grown up in the comfort of temperature-controlled environments. The first car I ever owned with air conditioning was a Dodge Omni, and I thought it was the greatest thing I’d ever driven. Sure, I’ve had cooler cars before and since then, but the first one with A/C is just as memorable.
In other news, I drove into the hot city for my LASIK consultation. After an hour of eye checks and measurements, I booked my surgery for the end of July. They had an opening this week, but since I can’t swim for a week afterward, I didn’t want to limit myself over the holiday weekend—especially with my son visiting. The next available date was mid-July, but that’s the night of a great band at my beach club, so the end of the month it is. I figure, after struggling to see for sixty years, what’s another few weeks?
I’m really excited to have two eyes that finally work together. Who knows—maybe I’ll even be a better bocce player with improved depth perception! And since I only need surgery on one eye, it’s nearly half the price—so it won’t even break the bank.
Summer’s off to a hot start, but there’s a lot to look forward to. Between flowers, music, and better vision on the horizon, I'd say things are looking pretty bright—literally and figuratively.
