Day 1050 Simple solutions
My DIY chicken waterer looks like it’s going to make life a lot easier this summer while giving my girls all the cold, fresh water they need. Chickens drink a surprising amount of water—typically at least a pint a day, and during hot weather, they can go through nearly a liter each. That’s per chicken! With 21 chickens, that adds up fast.
Keeping their water clean isn’t easy. They tend to jump into bowls and make a mess within minutes. I have the store-bought waterers, but I was eager to try making my own (with Tim’s drilling assistance, of course). I bought watering cups—about $7 for six—grabbed a Rubbermaid bin, and within minutes had a big vat of water and a flock of happy hens.
So far, I’m pretty impressed with my creation: it’s inexpensive, efficient, and has solved my summer watering worries. It’s amazing how simple some solutions can be. Wouldn’t it be nice if all of life’s problems could be fixed that easily?
Smack dab in the middle of a heat wave, my waterer came just in the nick of time! It's been so incredibly hot that Tim and I didn’t even bother with the beach—we stayed home and enjoyed the A/C instead. We’re still soaking in the calm after the chaos of having little kids underfoot. It’s funny how quickly you get used to a quiet, simple routine. We're definitely a couple of old souls, but we love our easygoing rhythm together.
Here's to cool water, quiet moments, and creative solutions that just make life better—one chicken at a time.
