Day 1096 Dunes, Drinks & Trivia Fun

Back to the beach—trivia night was calling.

Both Tim and I really enjoy playing trivia. We never go in expecting to win; we just love testing our random knowledge and exercising our aging brains.

There were six of us at our table—a big group, but all roughly the same age, so we shared a similar base of knowledge. I'm proud to say Tim and I were the standouts on our team: he brought an impressive amount of music trivia to the table, and I was quick to unscramble geography-related clues.

My brain has always been good at unscrambling letters—maybe because they're always scrambled anyway! Dyslexia wasn’t recognized in the sixties and seventies, so I just learned to adapt and “unscramble” daily life. Luckily, that particular skill comes in handy for certain trivia rounds!

Before heading up to trivia, we chatted with a couple who told us they'd played for several years but quit after getting too frustrated with cheaters. I’ve definitely seen people sneak glances at their phones, but they said folks now even use their smartwatches—I hadn’t even thought of that!

Sure, I could ask my watch for answers and get them in a flash, but where’s the fun in that? One of the rounds involved identifying athletes from photos. At the table next to us, a woman blatantly held her phone over the pictures—clearly using image search to cheat. I was happy to see the young man next to her push her phone away, clearly uncomfortable with her behavior.

I take real pride in every answer I get right. I can’t imagine robbing myself of that feeling by cheating—especially in a casual game played for nothing more than a free drink! These are full-grown adults… how sad must your life be if you feel the need to cheat your friends just to win trivia night?

Cheaters or not, we’ll definitely be back. Trivia always makes for a fun night out, and it breaks up the week nicely. Sitting at the Tiki Bar, looking out through the dunes and toward the ocean then heading inside for gaming, is a wonderful way to spend a Wednesday evening.

In the end, it's not about winning (isn't that what every loser says?)—it's about the laughs, the teamwork, and those satisfying moments when the answer is just on the tip of your tongue. Here's to more trivia nights, honest fun, and ocean breezes
