Day 1105 Waves & Riptides

The ocean has been wild lately, with hurricanes and tropical storms churning offshore. Thankfully, there haven’t been any direct hits to Rhode Island, so we can enjoy watching the massive surf without the fear of destruction. The Coast Guard House restaurant was rebuilt after the last major hurricane destroyed it—waves crashed right through the building as if it weren’t even there. If you look closely, you can still see the outdoor dining setup in front of the restaurant. That’s where I sat the last time I was there! I’m not sure I’d want to sit out there this week, though. I’m guessing they’ve brought all the furniture inside by now. Still, it must be incredible to sit indoors and watch the waves crash just beyond the glass.

As I watched the waves slam against the seawall—some even splashing over it without warning—I couldn’t help but be amazed by the recklessness of some people. A man was standing right up against the wall, with two small children perched on top of it to watch the surf. Completely unaware—or worse, unconcerned—that a single rogue wave could sweep those kids away in an instant. It’s shocking how often we hear stories of people being pulled off rocks or swept out by rip currents. It really is a harsh reminder that nature doesn’t care if we’re paying attention or not. "Survival of the fittest" feels uncomfortably real when storms roll in like this.

Most beaches have banned swimming this week due to dangerous riptides, but I’m still hoping to soak up a little sunshine if the weather allows. I could definitely use some vitamin D—so many of my friends are sick, and I’m doing everything I can to stay healthy, holding illness at bay like the waves slamming into shore.

Looking ahead, I’m gearing up for my car content... fingers crossed! Winning a two-year car lease would be amazing!

Here’s to safer shores, strong immune systems, and a little luck on the horizon. Stay tuned!
