Day 1122 Fall Temps & Happy Hens

Fall Temps and Happy Hens

Fall and spring are a chicken’s favorite times of year—neither too hot nor too cold. The earlier sunsets also make evening outings easier. Chickens love to free-range, but getting them back into their enclosure can be tricky—unless it’s close to sunset, when they instinctively march themselves back to roost safely for the night.

I managed to cook dinner again—for the second night in a row. It feels good to be settling into fall routines and home-cooked meals. How quickly our summer fun comes and goes!

Fortunately, I have plans for Florida in October. By then, I’ll be ready for a little sunshine! Turning sixty this year was fantastic, and now I get to celebrate milestone birthdays with so many of my friends. Dawn is turning sixty next month, so of course, I booked my ticket to Florida in a flash—I wouldn’t miss it for the world. We’re both wondering how the heck we got to be this old!

Sixty isn’t that old if you live to be ninety, but it feels ancient if you only make it to seventy... so really, there’s no telling if I’m old yet! I may not be a spring chicken, but I don’t think I’m doing too badly at sixty. I like to think the younger version of Rachel Smith would be proud of the life she built.

In the end, all we can really hope for is love, happiness, and good health—and so far, I’ve got all that… plus a handful of chickens.

Here’s to fall routines, old friends, and the beautiful mess of growing older. Life keeps clucking along—and I’m grateful to be here for it.
