Day 1146 Icelandic Troll
My new Icelandic troll has a prominent spot on top of my desk, right next to his Norwegian troll friend. My son traveled to Iceland a couple of weeks after my daughter and her family went—seems Iceland was the place to visit this summer! He knows how much I love unique treasures from around the world, especially ones said to bring a little luck. How thoughtful of him to bring this little guy all the way back for me!
After spending several days exploring Iceland, my son traveled to the Faroe Islands, where he spent over a week hiking and immersing himself in the local food and culture. Not long after he arrived, I started seeing Faroe Island salmon on every menu here at home. When I asked if he ate tons of it while there, he said nope—apparently they make so much money exporting it to the U.S. that they rarely eat it themselves. Instead, their diet includes sheep, horse, and puffin!
He shared all the details of his travels and showed me so many incredible photos. I love that he has such an adventurous spirit—although when he mentioned that three people died in one week on a trail he hiked, my mom instincts kicked in, and I wanted to wrap him in bubble wrap!
Tim and I agreed that we’re not cut out for risky trails. We’d much rather vacation on a beach and dance under the stars to live music. No treacherous terrain for us! Still, my son and I did enjoy a beautiful walk together, on smooth terrain, soaking in the sunshine and scenery of South County.
He always laughs at how much I love our little town. Having lived away from home for all of his adult life, I imagine he misses it more than he lets on—especially when the rest of my kids and grandkids drop by for breakfast, filling the kitchen with laughter and nonstop chatter.
Visits are never long enough, but I’m grateful for the time we get together when we can. Maybe next month I’ll visit him—Virginia is pretty nice too!
There's something magical about swapping stories, sharing meals, playing board games and simply being together. Lucky troll from Iceland, morning walk in my beautiful South County, house full of family, not a bad way to spend a day!!
