Day 1161 Living it up
So long to our 50s — and what a way to celebrate the end of an era! We kicked things off with a big birthday celebration for Dawn on the eve of her special day. The morning was spent lounging by the pool again (I know… it’s a tough life), soaking in the Florida sun. Eventually, we dragged our sun-kissed bodies out of the lounge chairs, got ourselves dressed up, and slipped into full party mode.
Dawn looked absolutely radiant — like a princess, in her pretty floral dress. Birthday girl fabulous! We headed to her favorite restaurant, La Masseria, where we were greeted by an impeccably set table overflowing with balloons, gorgeous floral centerpieces, a small army of waiters and more bottles of wine than a small village could drink in a week.
The long table was set for about 25 people, and as friends arrived — dripping in sparkly jewelry and smiles, Dawn glowed with pure happiness. Once the food started coming, it didn’t stop. Appetizers rolled in one after another until we were practically waving white flags even before the entrรฉes arrived. And then… out came the main event: massive Tomahawk steaks, giant veal parmesan, and every side dish imaginable. I’m pretty sure the amount of food on that table could have fed a small village for three months. Dawn's husband Richie really went all out with the menu!
After dinner, the energy turned up a notch. Limoncello and champagne cocktails were poured to loud cheers, and glasses were raised high for a birthday toast. Then the waitresses arrived with bottles of vodka, pouring shots directly into everyone’s mouths..standing on chairs for leverage with no refusals allowed. Fortunately, I maneuvered myself perfectly between the two of them so each thought the other had already served me. Shots averted!
Per Dawn’s request, out came her birthday cake: a classic Carvel ice cream cake, just like we had when we were kids...and still a favorite after all these years. The slices were cut small, but since many people passed on dessert, I happily snagged a couple of extras. A creamy bite of nostalgia definitely beats a vodka shot in my book.
I was so happy to visit with my Florida friends and to be seated between Dawn and my dear friend Jill. We had plenty of catching up to do, and since I seemed to know everyone at the table, I became the unofficial “who’s who” guide of the evening.
Dawn truly closed out her 50s in style — surrounded by laughter, friendship, and a whole lot of love. If this is how she celebrates 60, I can only imagine the sparkle and joy her 70th will bring. Here’s to another decade of unforgettable moments and fabulous parties!
