Day 1188 Rockettes

NYC or bust…
I set out early for an adventure in the Big Apple and another year of the Rockettes’ Spectacular Christmas Show. This year the Rockettes are celebrating 100 years—now that’s impressive. They showcased costumes from each decade and played a short film before the show that highlighted the sisterhood of the Rockettes, featuring dancers from across the generations.

I had Heather with me, my own little sisterhood friend. She and I walked around the city, had a great lunch, and of course, I found a couple of fabulous handbags to add to my overflowing collection. She had never seen the Rockettes before, so she enjoyed the novelty of it, while I could watch the show every single year to kick off the holiday spirit (pun intended). I truly believe it’s a show everyone should see at least once in their lifetime, but that’s just my two cents.

Seeing the Rockettes in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade only gives a hint of the glitter and glam they embody. The full show, with all its magic, is an entirely different experience. We shopped in all the fancy stores, leaving with nothing but inspiration for holiday outfits. J.Crew lured us in with a beautiful red taffeta skirt in the window, yet not one to be found inside. When I asked about it, the salesgirl said it could only be bought online… for $250! Yikes.

Immediately, I thought back to the red taffeta senior prom dress my mom made for me. I had envisioned the dress, but it existed only in my mind—until she brought it to life with her incredible sewing skills. It had a full skirt and a big ruffled neckline that wrapped around my shoulders and dipped into a deep V down my back… it truly was spectacular. I couldn’t zip that dress up today unless I was willing to remove at least four to six ribs, so now I’m wondering if we could cut off the bodice and repurpose the skirt into a holiday piece. And so, the quest begins: find the dress and convince my mom to work her magic once again. Somehow, I knew there was a reason I held onto that dress for forty years!

NYC is already festive for the holidays, lights, music, and the most amazing window displays everywhere you turn. We’re lucky to live only a few hours away, making it an easy and unforgettable day trip.

There’s just something about New York at Christmastime that fills you up in a way nothing else can. Until next time NYC, thanks for the sparkle, the memories, fashion inspiration.,And 100 years of Rockettes!
