Day 1192 Dinner

I often say what a blessing it is to have good friends… and my crew certainly knows how to make a gal feel loved. After working all day and came home exhausted, with a list of to-dos before the wake, funeral, and kids arriving to stay. Tim had promised to cook dinner and get a few things done around the house, but he called me before I made it home to let me know he hadn’t done anything… though he said it in such a funny way I couldn’t be mad. I’m sure he figured he’d cut me off at the pass, admitting he forgot everything he was supposed to do before I walked in and found him still in his PJs.

So I walked in the door and got straight to work—laundry, dishes—while my mind kept circling back to one thought: what on earth to make for dinner. As I stood at the kitchen sink scrubbing and washing, I received a text from Heather telling me she’d left a bag at my front door. I immediately went to check, and there it was: a bag filled with dinner! Stuffed shells, meatballs, fresh bread, soup, and homemade chocolate chip cookies. You can imagine my delight. I’m not sure how she knew, but she couldn’t have delivered a better gift, and her timing was absolutely perfect.

I’m just about the luckiest gal in the world to be surrounded by friends who take such good care of me… and I’m smart enough to know what treasures they are. Tim and I sat together, feasting on our delicious dinner, grateful for Heather, for each other, and for one more chore checked off our list.

Moments like these remind me how deeply we need one another, especially in hard times. And if I’ve learned anything, it’s that love often shows up in the simplest, most unexpected ways—like a warm meal on a long day.

The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.”Oscar Wilde
