Day 2116 Sparkle

Out and about for another Christmas party, this one at the Galilee Beach Club, with an amazing soup-to-nuts dinner buffet… or should I say, oysters to macaroons. Delicious! We had so much fun catching up with some of our summer friends, all of us anxious for the return of sunshine and salt air.

When I asked a friend to snap a picture of Tim and me in front of the tree, he took a couple, but cut us off at the knees. Ugh! I insisted on a retake so I could show off my fancy red shoes. It just didn’t seem right to leave them out of the photo. Tim asked if I had stolen them from the wicked witch, at least he noticed their sparkle!

Those shoes are going to be fantastic with my “new” red skirt. Yes, I dug out my old prom dress, and my mom is working her magic to turn it into a fabulous skirt. As we dissected the dress together, we marveled at her skills. She had sewn a beautiful ruffle around the neckline and down the back, and since it was attached separately, I should even be able to salvage it and wear it as a shawl with my fancy new skirt.

So if you see me strutting around in a red taffeta skirt with a dramatic ruffle shawl, looking like I think I’m all that and a bag of potato chips—it’s because I really am. I wore that prom dress in 1982, and resurrecting it in 2025 for a second life makes me as happy as a bird with a french fry.

I’m also pretty impressed that I knew exactly where that dress was, tucked away in a trunk with the Halloween decorations, just waiting for its moment in the sunshine again. (Maybe Wakefield School should have put me in charge of that darn time capsule!) And truly, my mom’s skills might be the most impressive part of this whole story. I can envision what I want, but she’s the one who makes it all happen.

You can expect to see a prom picture and the original dress photo before the unveiling of my holiday outfit—after all, a little suspense is good for all of us. Stay tuned… because this red skirt is just getting started, and it might just become my annual holiday skirt.

  1. Love that you are resurrecting the dress. My Mom made my prom dress as well. Mom’s are so impressive. Can’t wait to see the new skirt! ❤️
