Day 2117 Fabulous

So it finally happened, our first snow of the season, and my fabulous red taffeta dress was transformed into a holiday skirt. My mother and I both marveled at her sewing skills. Back in the day, she had made the dress for me, painstakingly and smartly sewing the ruffled neckline on separately. Because of that, she was able to salvage it today, and I wore it as a shawl. She even let me borrow her black turtleneck… how do I not own one???

As soon as my new skirt was ready, I immediately put it on, eager to wear it anywhere. Thankfully, I had a holiday cookie swap to attend, so my festive attire, although clearly overdressed for the occasion, was perfect. When I walked in, my friend smiled and announced that the spirit of Christmas had arrived. Not a bad way to enter a room!

We all admired each other’s baking skills, although I had cheated and made date nut bars instead of cookies, a gal’s gotta do what she can with limited time. Once we had filled our cookie trays, wrapped them in cellophane, and tied beautiful bows, we headed out onto the beach club deck to take our annual photo, this year in the snow. Fabulous.

Snow has a way of transforming the world into a clean, crisp slate, reality softened by a blanket of white powder. Bare tree limbs cling to flakes, wearing them perfectly. It truly was a day for transformation: my 1982 prom dress making a spectacular comeback, and all around me, a beautiful winter wonderland.

So eat your heart out, my old prom photo still stands the test of time. The hairdo was courtesy of Dorothy Hamill, and although hairstyles may change, fashion always finds its way back into style. Some things, like a great dress and a little holiday magic, never really go out of season. Don't be surprised if you see me wearing this skirt every chance I get...walking around as if I'm all that and a bag of potato chips...."cause lets face it, I really kinda am!!
