Day 2120 Pie
Both guest rooms are ready, fresh sheets on the beds and clothes neatly jammed into a closet, safely hidden away! I didn’t allow myself to sit down once I got home; the only way to keep going is not to stop. So I skipped dinner and opted to get both guest rooms prepped.
Tim thinks we’re crazy to have two guest rooms and is always trying to take one over for himself. But every time the kids come to visit, all the beds are taken. I even set up a new Pack ’n Play for the baby. I had gotten rid of mine a couple of years ago, figuring it had been through multiple grandchildren and had earned its keep. Thankfully, my sister-in-law Alida had a brand-new one she never used and kindly passed it along to me.
I love when the kids come to visit and the little ones head straight up to their room, knowing they’ll find a basket of toys, bedside storybooks, and a few stuffed animals. Kids always love these, moms, not so much. I’m sure our cat will stay hidden far deeper than my mess once she hears the tiny footsteps running through the house.
I’ll deal with my mess in 2026…gotta have a goal, right? A friend of mine puts all her crap into a laundry basket and sticks it in her car before company visits, genius, really. I’m sure we all have our hiding spots for messes, although I’m aware there are freaks out there living in totally clean houses! For now, mine has the illusion of tidy, and I’ll take it.
Company comes to visit us anyway, not our house, and we are so excited for a couple of weeks of a full house. Heck, we may even need to use the pull-out couch in the basement!
Next up: figuring out my menu for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I’ve got one allergic to walnuts, one gluten-free, and one who doesn’t eat any seed oils...have fun with that! My daughter wants ham, my son prefers turkey, while my other son wants lamb. I may be spending my holiday in the kitchen trying to make everyones dreams come true.
Tim, of course, goes with whatever I make, as long as there’s a pumpkin pie in the refrigerator. Once his pie is gone, he tells me we’re out of pie as if we’ve run out of milk or some other staple. Somehow, he thinks pie is a must-have in the fridge, and lucky for him, I try my best to keep him well stocked.
The holidays rolling in are always a little chaotic, a little messy, and very full, but that’s exactly how I like it. A house filled with people, laughter, endless board games and maybe a few crumbs is always worth the effort. And if there’s pie in the fridge, we’re doing just fine.
