Day 2173 Sons

Apparently, flying during the Super Bowl is a very good idea! I arrived at the airport, was the only person going through check-in, and made it to my gate in record time. My flight was only about a quarter full, so I happily claimed an entire row of three seats, put my legs up, and took a cozy catnap on the one-hour flight home.

We had spent the day running a few errands, then playing games and just hanging out, exactly what weekends are made for. Before leaving, I hung my beautiful new robe in my son’s guest room closet and left my new slippers there as well for next time… yes, he even bought me slippers. Spoiled! I’ll have to make it a point to visit again sooner, it’s crazy how fast time flies. Tim may even join me one of these days.

All that lounging was perfect, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that I’ve been completely riveted by the recent kidnapping of my morning show host’s mother… yes, her mother! Who the heck kidnaps an 84-year-old woman? She’s been missing for eight days now, with ransom notes, demands for Bitcoin, and there was even a severed finger sent as proof of life. What the heck?! To make it even more disturbing, someone completely unrelated to the crime tried to profit from the situation by sending their own demand for money, just attempting to capitalize on the crisis. About as low as a human can go.

When my kids were little, I remember being constantly afraid of someone trying to snatch them up. It only took a few horrific kidnappings to keep me on guard for eternity. But I never imagined I’d have to worry about my eighty-year-old mother. My heart breaks for the family, and while these crimes are often committed by someone close, only time will tell. I've watched too many crime shows to think this won't eventually be solved.

So while the world seemed to be spinning a little crazier than usual, I was grateful to be lounging for the weekend and enjoying a peaceful flight home. My youngest son picked me up from the airport at midnight—bonus time with him. I had warned him my flight would be late, and his response was, “There’s no time that’s too late for me to get you.” Gotta love him.

It's important to soak up the calm when it shows up, because it never stays long. Gratitude, comfort, and love don’t make the craziness of the world disappear, but they do make it easier to navigate. Back home just after midnight.... safe, sound and ready for all the weekend chores I ignored while in Virginia.
