Cautious

We all need a safe space to hide now and again, peering out at the world from a cozy hiding spot. Our sweet basement cat is growing more confident each day, but she doesn’t roam far from the protection of the closed basement door. We took the flap off the cat door so she can sit and peek out at us, sizing up the room to decide if it’s safe to enter.

I’ve got no issue with a cat (or a person) who takes their time before jumping into the mix. Some of us, like myself, leap right into social situations with both feet, while others prefer to dip a toe in the water first. Both approaches are equally fine; it’s what makes the world go around.

I’m glad the cat has this system in place, because with the grandkids arriving next weekend, she’ll definitely need a place to retreat. I can’t imagine she’ll be thrilled with tiny footsteps running through the house or the bursts of noise that come with three little boys. And with almost everyone coming for Easter, we’ll have a full house.

I still need to work out my menu, set a time, and get the house cleaned for the holiday. I wish I could say I had a productive weekend, but that wasn’t the case. After a busy Friday and dinner out, followed by another dinner out Saturday, I woke up Sunday and headed to breakfast with my mom, sister, and brother-in-law. Tim didn’t join us, 8:00 just seemed too early for him. I figured he needed his rest before his big race challenge on Monday… yikes.

I’m sure we’re all anxious to see how he does. One mile in 11 minutes might not sound too difficult, but I think he’s learned from all his practicing that he’s slowed down a bit with age. Still, my money’s on him, pride, stubbornness, and determination alone should shave off a minute or two. And I could never bet against him, I’m pretty sure that was in our marriage vows.

Hopefully he pulls through and wins, giving us another reason to dine out and celebrate. Otherwise, he might be the one needing a hiding spot of his own… move over, basement cat!

Either way, between the race, the holiday, and a house full of family, it looks like we’re in for a lively and  memorable, week ahead.
