Gold

Having woken up at 3:30 and unable to get back to sleep, I knew it would be a long day… but somehow I made it! I even managed to pull myself together to attend a fundraiser for my grandson’s high school, bringing my mom and Tim along for what ended up being a really fun night.
I do love a silent auction. I love to win a basket or two, although Tim reminds me every time that I didn’t actually win… we just paid more than anyone else. Potato, potahto. I walked out feeling like a winner with two amazing gift baskets filled with so many little prizes it felt like Christmas.
The craziest thing was disassembling one of the baskets and finding a handwritten poem by one of the students, Robert Frost’s Nothing Gold Can Stay. I’ve mentioned a time or two that Robert Frost was my dad’s favorite poet, so I’m sure it was no small coincidence that fate intervened so that particular basket would come home with me. The poem also a reminder of how fleeting life can be.
I love the way the universe places little love notes from heaven all around us, we just need to be open to seeing them. So needless to say, whatever we paid was money well spent.
I did wonder why the high school needs to raise so much money, since each family already pays a pretty penny to have their child attend. Not sure what that’s all about, but I’ll still be first in line for the next event.
It was also kind of cool that my grandson had three generations representing him at the event. Not every high schooler has his mom, grammy, and great-grammy alive, never mind out and about for a night on the town.
It was a beautiful night inside the Towers, looking down on the ocean waves and feeling as if we were on top of the world. The room was filled with parents of high schoolers, about 90% of them people I knew, so there was no shortage of chit-chat. Tim was even recognized as "Rachel's Husband" by several people from social media....not what he wants his claim to fame to be.... but it could be worse!
But back to my baskets: one had a gift card for a Big Donut, the other for fresh lobsters. Looks like my victory lap will continue throughout the month as I cash in on those gift cards.
Seeing so many old friends was the cherry on top, and it reminded me how special these community moments can be. Sometimes the best nights are the ones you could easily skip...but thank goodness I didn't pass on this one.
