Pine Tree State

Gotta love a room with a great view. Even on an overcast day, being able to slide open the door and step out onto the balcony to soak in Maine’s fresh air was delightful. I’m a Rhode Island gal through and through, but if I had to pick a second favorite state, Maine would have my vote—hands down.

I love warmth and sunshine for vacation, but New England is where it’s at for good living. Ocean views, great hikes, fresh air, room to breathe, and the sights and sounds of nature all around, it’s hard to beat. We drove back to RI after a quick few-day visit to the Pine Tree State, realizing we need to carve out a longer trip next time for a real vacation. The drive home was a breeze, with a quick stop at the tax-free NH liquor store to stock up, a must when passing through. With a trunk full of booze, we may need to plan a party now?!

I’m happy to report that while we were away, both Melissa and my daughter Jessica took great care of our cat and the chickens, and even had a chance to meet the elusive cat, who actually came out for attention! The chickens, on the other hand, freaked them both out—noisy and a bit wild when you approach their coop. I know they’re just excited, but apparently they made quite the impression on both my daughter and Missy.

I’m so happy the cat is warming up to strangers and growing more confident each day, even if she’s still sticking close to her basement zone. Baby steps.

We arrived home just in time for Tim to throw on a green St. Paddy’s Day shirt and head out to meet friends for cards. I was more than happy I had canceled my mahjong group and instead tucked myself into bed early, exhausted from a busy trip and weekend. I mentally rewrote a few of my slides and will tweak them and make fresh notes for my next presentation, whenever that may be. I have a feeling another one is right around the corner, and according to the saying, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail,” so don’t mind me if I over prep for things.

I’m glad my first speaking gig was in Maine and was so well received—phew—but oh, how I love to come home to my beautiful RI. Sometimes a short getaway is all it takes to reset and remind you what you love most. Next time, we’ll stay a little longer, but for now, I’m grateful for the memories, the fresh air, and the feeling of coming home...to my scaredy cat, crazy chickens, and all.
