Holiday vibes

Spring may be in the air, but the holiday vibe is still going strong in my house. Poinsettias still have bright red leaves and continue to grow in my kitchen windowsill, right below a stained-glass snowman… it might be time for me to swap out the décor.

What to do with these pretty plants? I’ve kept them alive before for ages, but they never come back looking as good as they do the first year. Still, every year I give it another go and end up throwing them out by September. People give the plant a bad rap, saying they’re toxic to pets. While they are mildly toxic, they certainly wouldn’t kill a cat...and what crazy cat would eat one anyway?

I haven’t seen my basement cat show even the slightest interest in eating any of my plants, but she sure does love the fancy treats I buy for her. She’s become a regular visitor on the main floor, waltzing into the living room like a boss. I think I’ve even seen her venture upstairs, although I can’t be sure if she’s just on the stairs or has gone all the way up. She still enjoys hiding out in her basement spot, but at least she’s out daily, exploring and enjoying the house.

She’s a sweet cat who loves attention, but still on her own terms. I think she found the perfect home: Tim and I go about our business, and so does our cat, three independent souls who love each other but also enjoy doing our own thing.

Tim was out with a friend for dinner, so I happily settled in for a peaceful Friday night, taking the rare opportunity to look through my closet and try to wrap my head around potential outfits for the Derby party. I’ll be working all day and will need to make a Superman-speed change of clothes before heading off. Not my usual level of attention to detail, but I think I can pull together a decent Derby ensemble.

The month of May is here, and the Derby party kicks off the spring season of fun festivities… which might finally mean it’s time to say goodbye to the snowman. Or maybe just one more week. After all, traditions, like poinsettias and a little lingering holiday cheer, are hard to let go.
