Simple things

A small vase filled with tiny fresh flowers, about as close to perfection as it gets.
I snapped this photo while out to lunch in Williamsburg. While everyone else was busy devouring their food and drinks, I found myself admiring the beauty of the simple centerpiece sitting quietly on the table. Sometimes it's the smallest details that capture my attention the most.
I try very hard to notice life's little gifts and treasures, strategically placed throughout the day like hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Maybe that's why I'm such an eternal optimist. How can you be a pessimist when you take the time to notice Mother Nature's masterpieces? A cluster of wildflowers, a spectacular sunset, a seashell washed ashore, or even a tiny vase of blooms on a lunch table can completely change the tone of a day.
Somehow, the universe always seems to work its magic for me. In return, I try to remain grateful, always. Life certainly hands us difficult moments, unexpected challenges, and periods of heartbreak. But when I look back over the years, those moments seem to pale in comparison to the abundance of beauty, love, laughter, and wonder that have filled the spaces in between.
My dad has been on my mind a lot lately. It's hard to believe he's been gone for so many years, yet he still feels like part of my everyday life. Certain thoughts, memories, and moments instantly bring him to mind. I like to think he's looking down on me and my children, giving us strength during the hard times and smiling alongside us during the happy ones.
And he's not alone. I've got my grandparents watching over me, too. Between all of them, I suspect I have a little more backup than the average person realizes.
I still carry a tiger's eye stone with me, the same one I held in my hand during my dad's funeral. Over the years it has become much more than a rock. It's a reminder of love, connection, strength, and the comforting feeling that the people we love never truly leave us.
So here's the lesson for the day (if you need one): Look for the small specks of beauty. Pay attention to the signs of love and support that surround you. Stop and admire the flowers, the sunsets, the smiles, and the unexpected moments of grace. The world is full of reminders that we're connected to something bigger than ourselves.
Whether you call it faith, the universe, destiny, or simply love, I believe it's always there, quietly watching over us, whether we realize it or not.
