Wacky

Although I have items placed around my house that may look completely random to the untrained eye, many of them have been deliberately positioned with great intention. I believe in the power of energy, the flow of chi, and the importance of creating a home filled with good vibes.

That glass of water sitting in the corner wasn't forgotten or abandoned. According to Feng Shui, water symbolizes wealth, abundance, opportunity, success, and harmony, but only when it's placed in the right location. The money tucked into my new ashtray alongside a piece of citrine isn't there by accident either. Citrine is often called the "merchant's stone" and is believed to attract prosperity, positivity, and abundance. Whether it's science or simply positive thinking, I enjoy the ritual of it all.

I admit it, I am a sucker for a good Feng Shui practice, and if crystals are involved, even better.

You might also spot a small jar hidden somewhere in my home, filled with salt, rice, and five cloves. Don't ask me to explain all my wackiness ... but when people walk into my home, they always comment on how comfortable and welcoming it feels. So something must be working.

We've all stepped into a house that looks beautiful, perfectly decorated, and straight out of a magazine, yet somehow the energy feels off. A home is more than furniture and paint colors. It's the feeling it gives you when you walk through the door. Positive energy, in my opinion, needs to be encouraged and nurtured..and negative energy must always be removed.

My kids have always laughed at my obsession with airflow. Regardless of the season, I firmly believe we should open our windows every day, even if only for a few minutes...27 minutes ideal. Fresh air clears out stagnant energy, refreshes the space, and somehow makes everything feel lighter. Maybe it sounds a little wacky, but I've stuck by that philosophy for years.

And while my children still roll their eyes at many of my rituals, they've learned not to question my methods too much. More than once they've watched something unexpectedly work out and have reluctantly admitted that maybe, just maybe, Mom's crystals have a little magic in them after all.

Water placement is another one of my favorite Feng Shui practices. It's said that when standing at your front door and looking out, placing a small bowl or cup of water to the left can encourage harmony and positive energy within the home. Whether you believe in Feng Shui, crystals, or none of it at all, there is something to be said for surrounding yourself with objects that make you feel hopeful, peaceful, and connected.

So if you happen to see a glass of water in a strange corner of my house, don't move it. It's exactly where it's supposed to be. And who knows? If you allow yourself to believe in a little bit of magic, you just might find that some of these rituals work after all.
