Zoobilee

Ever have one of those days that seems to go on forever, leaving you wondering how on earth you managed to pack it all into just one day? I suppose waking up at the crack of dawn and not crawling into bed until just before midnight helps. One thing's for sure, I will never be accused of wasting time!

The day began with me putting together the flowers for my new window boxes when Melissa and Erica showed up for our early morning walk. Why not kick off the day with three miles? I always love walking with Missy, and when Erica is in town, it's an extra treat for all of us.

Our walk took an unexpected turn when we spotted a tiny baby bird lying in the middle of the bike path, directly in harm's way. It must have fallen from its nest. Missy gently scooped the little thing into her hat while we searched for its nest or its mother, but no luck. After deciding the safest option was to bring it to a local bird rescue, we continued on our way feeling pretty good about the fact that one tiny life had been saved before breakfast....not that I ever had time for that!

No sooner had I arrived home than my mom showed up with buckets of Hostas to plant around my patio. Back to work I went, digging, planting, hauling dirt, and rearranging garden beds. What I thought would take an hour somehow turned into most of the afternoon.

Then my daughter stopped by for a visit, and I made the mistake of asking if I could borrow my son-in-law's truck to make a couple of trips to the dump. My mission was to clean up the construction zone around the patio before next weekend's holiday gathering.

Well... while I waited for the truck to arrive, I figured I might as well clean out the storage shed under the deck.

You know where this is going.

One dump run somehow became four!

Tim wasn't exactly thrilled with the workload I created, but with only a little grumbling, he climbed aboard and helped anyway. By the time we finished, we were filthy, exhausted, and our not-so-young bodies were loudly suggesting we call it a day.

But we had plans.

After quick showers, we headed off to Zoobilee, one of my daughter Jessica's and my favorite summer events. Great food, friends, beautiful animals, live music... and even more food! Best of all, this year we weren't melting in the usual sweltering heat.

Jess was especially excited because she got to meet Rosie and her husband from The Real Housewives. I have to admit, I had absolutely no idea who they were, but Jess was thrilled and happily snapped a few photos with them. Maybe I should start watching... then again, who has that kind of time?

The band at Zoobilee wasn't quite our style this year, which is usually one of the highlights for us, so Tim and I decided to head over to our beach club instead. We rolled in around 10:00 p.m. like a couple of teenagers squeezing every last minute out of a Saturday night.

Diva and the Playboys had everyone dancing with nonstop energy. Their playlist leaned heavily into '90s and 2000s hits, I'm definitely more of a '60s, '70s, and '80s girl, but I still kicked off my shoes, danced a little in the sand, as I soaked in a perfect summer evening.

By the time we finally made it home, I practically crawled into bed. My legs were screaming after miles of walking, hours of gardening, four dump runs, and dancing in the sand.

Exhausting?

Absolutely.

Worth every minute?

Without a doubt.

With one more day left in the weekend and family arriving next weekend to stay with us, there's clearly no rest in sight. But if life is measured by the memories we make not of the hours we spend sitting still... I'd say this was a day well lived....lord knows I didn't waste a moment sitting still!
