1000 Grand

Some evenings are meant for adventure, and others are meant for simply being home. After a busy stretch, this was definitely one of those "stay put" kind of nights.

Dinner on the deck, a little laundry, a sink full of dishes, and nowhere we needed to be. Honestly, it sounded perfect.

If Tim and I don't already have plans, we usually check in before I leave work so I know whether I should shift into high gear or downshift for the evening. His request was simple: "Let's stay home." He was already stretched out on the deck, soaking up the sunshine, and I was more than happy to oblige.

I did decide to swing by the grocery store to grab a couple of steaks for the grill. Before I left the market, I sent Tim a quick text asking if he needed anything.

His response came back almost instantly.

"A box of 1000 Grand bars...they're all the way to the far right."

I had to laugh.

Tim has always had a knack for requesting things I would never think to buy on my own, so the ice cream candy request didn't surprise me one bit. What did surprise me was that he knew exactly where they were without even being in the store. Clearly, he'd been scouting them out on a previous trip, just waiting for me to pull the trigger.

I was already standing in the checkout line when his text came through, so I stepped out of line and headed over to the ice cream freezer. Sure enough...all the way to the far right...there they were.

As I reached in to grab a box, I heard a deep voice behind me say, "Hey..."

I looked through the freezer door and saw a very tall young man smiling back at me.

Then he added, "Grammy!"

It was my grandson.

I still can't believe how tall he's become. Every time I see him, he seems to have grown another inch. We both got a good laugh over Tim's very specific ice cream request, and when my grandson said he wanted to shop with me while his dad finished up somewhere else in the store, I couldn't have been happier.

Even though I had already finished my shopping, I gladly wandered the aisles with my Cash man, pretending I might need another item or two. Those unexpected few minutes together were worth far more than anything on my grocery list.

It's funny how life works sometimes. If Tim hadn't texted me asking for those silly 1000 Grand bars, I would have checked out a minute earlier and completely missed my grandson.

Sometimes the smallest detours turn into the sweetest moments.

And that unexpected visit? It was worth far more than 1000 Grand.
