Smart decisions

I've made some smart decisions in my life...but every once in a while, I make a decision that reminds me just how smart some of those choices have been.

Last year, one of those decisions was taking a completely random day off to spend with friends.

We had planned a day trip to Block Island, but Mother Nature had other plans. With high winds canceling some ferries and making the one that was still running feel like a questionable choice at best, we decided to change course. Instead, we opted for a day in Jamestown and Newport, and what a great decision that turned out to be.

We pretended to be tourists, soaking up every bit of fun we could muster. We went sightseeing, shopping, dining, laughing, and simply enjoying a full day filled with friendship. We were carefree...or at least that's how we'll remember it!

The best part was that we adore one another so much that it really didn't matter which direction any one of us wanted to go. The rest of us were more than happy to follow. There was no agenda, no arguing over what to do next, and no one worrying about the clock. We were simply together, enjoying the day and each other.

We make decisions every single day, and even the smallest ones can have big consequences. That's why I  never make them lightly, especially when other people are affected by the outcome. Life is short, and one of the smartest decisions we can make is to surround ourselves with the best humans we can find.

And even better? Surround yourself with the people who would defend you in a room you're not in. Those are the people worth holding onto.

I've been blessed to find my herd of friends, different pods, different chapters, different parts of my life, but all incredibly important. They are, without a doubt, some of my life's greatest treasures.

So...it may be time to plan another adventure. I really think this needs to become an annual tradition. And who knows? Maybe we'll even make it to Block Island one of these days!

Until then, I'll happily take another random day off, another adventure, and another day surrounded by people who make life so much sweeter. Because sometimes the smartest decisions are the ones that simply make us happy.

“There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship.” — Thomas Aquinas
