Summer Nights

When I got home, I was so darn tired I wasn't even sure I'd have the energy to climb into bed. But life has a funny way of changing your plans.
I needed to drop my car off at the shop so they could put on new tires first thing in the morning, so off we went. Tim picked me up at the mechanic's, and once we were both back in the car, we looked at each other and figured...we were already out, so why not grab a bite to eat?
Our first stop was GBC, but when we pulled in, we realized they were hosting a private event. No problem. We wandered next door to Champlin's to hang out with the tourists instead.
We grabbed seats at the tiki bar overlooking the waterway, watching the boats come and go. It's easy to understand why visitors love that spot. The view is beautiful, the salty breeze is refreshing, and there's always something happening on the water.
As I looked across the bar, a face caught my attention. It seemed familiar...or at least it used to be. Suddenly it clicked. It was someone Tim and I had gone to high school with, someone we hadn't seen in decades.
Without even thinking, I called his name across the bar.
He turned around with a surprised look on his face, amazed that I had recognized him after all these years. Before long, the three of us were laughing, catching up on life, and reminiscing about people, places, and stories we hadn't thought about in ages. It's funny how time disappears when you're swapping old memories.
Then, as if the evening wasn't already full of surprises, I got a text from Tory. She happened to be right next door at George's Tiki Bar! Her husband was playing a gig, singing and playing guitar, so we wandered over to join them.
The rest of the evening unfolded exactly the way the best summer nights do, completely unplanned. We listened to great music, enjoyed the ocean air, and spent time with good friends. Tory and I laughed about how difficult it's been to get together lately. Work has a way of interfering with all the fun, but we're determined to make it happen before summer slips away.
Somewhere along the way, I found my second wind. The exhaustion I felt when I first got home had completely disappeared, replaced by good conversation, familiar faces, live music, and a perfect beach evening. Amazing what a little fresh air and good company can do.
Of course, once I finally made it home, I crashed hard and fast.
Our summer nights are disappearing far too quickly, and I don't like it one bit. But every now and then, an ordinary errand turns into an unforgettable evening, reminding me that some of life's best moments are the ones you never planned. I'm certainly glad we made the most of this one.
