Day 479 Ketchup and all

Beautiful Newport on a sunny day, ok so it was for a Dr's apt. but why not make the most of it?  Don't let the sunshine fool you, it was a bit too cold for a walk on the Cliff Walk, especially since Tim forgot his warm coat. We drove along the shoreline like a bunch of tourists stopping at various scenic lots to take in the spectacular sights. Why are scenic stops always filled with sketchy people? An old run down car filled with three grown men, a single man in a car filled with smoke, I can only imagine what they all thought of Tim and I. We drove along Bellevue Drive looking at all the beautiful mansions, decorated for the holidays. Although Tim use to live in Newport he was never one to take the historic tours. I suggested we return to walk through a mansion or two so we can see them in all their festive beauty. Belcourt has a walking candlelight ghost tour and the Breakers is one of several mansions that open up during evening hours to better take in all the spectacular holiday lights. As we drove, I of course gave Tim another one of my famous history lessons, about the Vanderbilts, Doris Duke and their corresponding homes. Doris Dukes home, Rough Point seems smaller in scale but is packed with spender, there's even an original Renoir in one of the bedrooms! Since Tim has been watching the Gilded age with me I've been trying to point out various scenes from Newport. The Newport Tennis Hall of Fame so far has been the easiest to identify, but once you've gone through the mansions a few times you begin to recognize various rooms used in the miniseries. Season I used at least six Newport Mansions for filming and season II even more! Driving down Ocean Avenue the sunshine was bright over the water as we looked out for seals. It's no wonder Jay Leno and his wife stopped to buy a house one day when driving along the beautiful road. After seeing an amazing property along the shore, they pulled into the driveway and spoke with the caretaker, asked him to call the owner and once on the phone, Jay asked if he could buy the house, complete with everything in it, furniture, ketchup, salt shakers and all. Not sure the owner could have refused the 13.5 Million so the deal was made! Tim laughed when he heard about the ketchup and agreed with Jay, that's the only way to buy a house! Less glamorous was the visit the the grocery store on our way home. To see Tim walk through the market throwing items into the cart without care of price comparison or sales, you'd think he was a Vanderbilt. I let several things go but had to intervene a few times, putting items back or swapping them out for a matching item on sale. Who knew a trip to the Dr's could lend itself to such an adventurous day but I for one am ready for his next appointment!
