Day 652 Plastic Conundrum
Bubble wrap for miles, all to protect one new item that was carefully delivered. As someone who brings recycling to the transfer station twice a week, enough already. Packaging has become my nemesis, the giant boxes for no reason, the plastic that tightly seals every item we buy from food to electronics, all adding to my frustrations and chores. I've always been a fan of reusing items, clothes, dishes, furniture, just about anything that can be reused, why not? When I purchase a previously loved item at a thrift shop its free of plastic, tags, boxes and saves me another trip to the dump as well as a pocketful of money. The motto reduce, reuse and recycle makes sense, but will only work when manufacturers figure out the reduce piece of the puzzle. When Tim opened his package and I caught a glimpse of the amount of bubble wrap I quickly called to him not to throw it away! We carefully rolled up the yards of wrap, the very least we can do is reuse it once, twice or twenty-five times before discarding it. Ironically, the next day I was in Walmart and saw bubble wrap rolls for sale, I snapped a quick photo to show Tim, we were sitting on a gold mine of packing materials. I'm not sure what we'll need to wrap so carefully in our future, but guessing we'll find something...someday. I try to do my small part for the planet every chance I get and although it amounts to a tiny ripple, each ripple has a lasting effect. I'm sure someday when I wrap something in a mile of bubble wrap, I'll look like the wasteful person using so much plastic. Whats wrong with tissue paper anyway? Seems like a plastic conundrum that for now, the crazy cycles continues.
