Day 678 Cookout and Fish Stories

Hot dogs, hamburgers, games, fishing and lounging about with family, what a perfect way to spend a Saturday. Although I wasn't so much lounging as I was facilitating food, drinks and cleaning up. My grandsons were eager to try their hands at fishing, especially with their uncle. My son found himself busy threading fishing lines, untangling lines and retrieving lost tackle, instead of reeling in big fish, although, fish stories were made and I'm sure will be told for years to come. The tree branch hanging down on the other side of the river became the nemesis of the day, catching the most, capturing any misdirected line it could. After hours of frustration and lost tackle, the boys launched the canoe, paddled across the river, cut line and retrieved a few fake worms and bobbins. After a successful retrieval mission they packed up their fishing gear and focused on backyard ballgames and food. I was thoroughly entertained watching the antics of the day, as I prepped food and sat chatting with my daughter on the deck. She's taken to bird watching and spent the afternoon with binoculars in hand, identifying each bird she spotted proudly. Tim grilled up burgers and dogs and we all filled our plates and our bellies before coming inside for more table games. My youngest had brought one of his favorite boardgames that everyone learned and played enthusiastically for hours, even my daughter who typically hates playing games. My son in law also surprised me by reading one of my previous blogs, catching up on what I've written about him. I'm not sure he was aware that I write every day and had only recently heard I wrote about him....good thing I had  good things to say about him. I'm amazed at how many people follow me on instagram thinking it's only a photo each day. It's a good thing I write for myself or I'd be as frustrated as my fishing crew. I suppose we all look at what's right in front of us, usually not taking the time to look deeper or delve into what's behind the obvious... human nature. There was no need to look deeper into my day with family, it was exactly as I knew it would be, relaxed, entertaining and filled with love and laughter...and a little friendly family competition.
