Day 711 Four Score + Five

Birthday dinner at the Coast Guard House to celebrate my mom turning 85 years young. We all hope to live long, but it's important to be healthy, physically fit and have all our cognitive functions. Living in an age of knee and hip replacements its impressive to be 85 with all your original parts. Genetically I've done well, all my parts are still in tact...fingers crossed they give me at least another 25 years. On a hot July birthday my mom was outside mowing her lawn before we left for dinner...not what you might expect but no surprise to me or my sister.  I'm not sure what age we are suppose to call it, but for now, she still does all her own yard care, house work, painting, projects, whatever needs to be done between trips & vacations. We like to take credit for our good health, bragging about great diets or fitness routines when the majority of our success (or failure) is genetic. I'm well aware of my hereditary advantages and often remind my kids of this when they show off their fitness abilities, they've become accustomed to me saying, "you're welcome". My sister has more than a few metal parts holding her together now, after a bad accident in Ireland where she shattered both femurs and broke various other bones....ouch! Even genetics can't win a battle against a car crash. The three of us enjoyed a delicious dinner, dessert and of course a present or two. I gave my mom a funny end of life planner, titled, Sorry, it's your problem now because I'm dead. Fortunately she still has her sense of humor and loved it, having been intrigued by the birthday card where I wrote, "I hope there's no need to use the gift for another 20 years". Imagine living to be a hundred and five years old??? Tim and I look forward to growing old ...er together and keeping all our wits and physical functions in tact, although I hate yard work now so can't imagine doing any when I'm older. I do think we'll be really fun retired people, I'll play golf, mahjong, have projects galore and Tim will enjoy card games, day drinking and listening to live music. So far, I've enjoyed every age I've been so I'm looking forward to the years to come. If my mom is any indicator of what four score + five looks like, I'll take it!
