Day 826 Drop by
Autumn decor will never rank as my favorite, but that doesn't mean I won't over do every display I throw together. Centerpieces are funny, they really only work with an unused table and are quickly dismantled when it's time for actual dining. I might set up a buffet for my next gathering just so I can keep my pretty centerpiece in tact. I have a bin of fall decor that amazes me every time I open it and see all the pretty ceramic pumpkins and knick knacks waiting to become instant holiday cheer. It took all my willpower to ignore the stack of Christmas bins, calling to me, ready to be on display (I'm ready too). Tim sat, watching football as I scurried around the house, swapping out screens for storm windows, vacuuming, decorating and throwing in a few never ending loads of laundry. He usually goes to a friends house for football, probably to maintain invisibility during my Sunday chores. Home for the day, he was smack dab in the middle of the mix for the afternoon, complaining about the noise of the vacuum cleaner....really...doesn't he realize the sound is music to my ears? Kidding...I dislike vacuuming more than almost any household chore but, like it or not, it has to be done. I cleaned my kitchen counters, tackling the array of chargers and cords that find their way to the singular outlet they all end up at, right next to my kitchen sink. I'm really not sure where clean people hide all of their chargers and the gadgets that need charging? Maybe they have home offices, pantries, hidden cupboards or secret drawers? With non of those options available, mine are always visible...but for the moment, I've squirreled them away as if they don't exist. I skipped playing Mahjong with my friends to tackle my chores, not something I would recommend going forward. I felt a bit like Cinderella, missing the ball to clean the castle. Although, I was happy with the results of my labors, clean house, pretty fall decor, company ready and with one more weekend day off due to the Monday holiday. The company ready house is such a funny thing, company must sense when the house is clean and avoid stopping by until it's once again got that "lived in" look. My house has more drop by traffic than most, one of the things I love about living in town. Having grown up out in the woods, we never had any drop by guests. Location was my top priority when buying my house almost forty years ago. I wanted a convenient location for drop by company, a revolving door of guests and a welcoming door that would always be open to friends. I'd say I succeeded with my wish and over the years, it's remained one of my favorite features of my home. My kids use to laugh when they were teens, never knowing who they would find sitting in our kitchen when they came downstairs, so not sure they loved it quite as much as I always have. If company wants to see any of my fall decor, they better swing by fast, I'll be onto Christmas sparkle as fast as I can be, probably Thanksgiving night. My son often says that I make work for myself with all the switching up of seasonal and holiday decor, and I suppose he's right but I can't imagine living any other way. Each seasonal display and holiday knick knack brings back memories and inspires joy and happiness so let the decorating continue...even if this season isn't my color theme of choice.
