Day 832 Turkey...again
No matter how busy my day ahead appears to be, there's always time for a morning walk. Melissa and I bundled up for the cold temps but the bright sunshine was so warm that once we started walking, even the air felt warm. Refreshed and energized from our walk, I set to prepping for another dinner party and a few endless household chores. Friends were arriving late afternoon and what to make for dinner the question of the hour. With pounds of turkey left over from my Friendsgiving, I searched for a recipe that called for a bird..yes, turkey again! I found a simple recipe for turkey shepherds pie, so easy I'm not sure why I hadn't thought of it before! I shredded turkey chunks, mixed them with gravy, added a layer of carrots then topped it with freshly mashed potatoes...delicious! The rest of the bird went straight into the crock pot to simmer all night for a soup. I'm sure by Thanksgiving both Tim and I will have had our fill of turkey but holy cow does the house smell good. After dinner our group broke into teams, guys against gals, to play a few games, and continued playing long enough for the guys to close to margin so my teams win wasn't crushing. Silly games are so fun with the right group of friends! I was so tired by the time our company left that I didn't clean a thing and went straight to bed... waking up to a mess is never ideal but sometimes it has to be. It seems like we're always on the go throughout the summer months, mess and all it's nice to have friends over and entertain at home throughout the fall and winter seasons. My chickens certainly are loving all the scraps from my dinner parties, eating well and enjoying a variety of foods. Yes, chickens eat turkey and happen to love it! They've also been loving all the falling eaves of the season, I rake them up and put piles into the run, giving my girls endless enjoyment scratching through for bugs. Seems like everyone's settling into fall, embracing the cooler weather and making the most out of the new season. Good food, great friends, fun and games.... makes even the messiest kitchen worth every minute.
