Day 840 Lights, Glitter & Cheer
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas and I couldn't be more excited. Although my company had stayed until after 11pm, my relentless internal alarm had me up before 5am. After cleaning my kitchen, clearing my dining room table, washing all the dishes and of course, writing, I set to work taking down any and all thanksgiving decor. I know the holiday isn't even here yet, but since Tim and I are opting to do our own thing, with no kids visiting, why not? All my fall decor fits into one bin, now packed and put away for next year. Christmas decor seems to come out of the woodwork, apparently multiplying while in storage. I brought in at least six bins from the shed, each containing merriment and cheer. Now to get it all distributed around the house....I've got my work cut out for me. First things first, I put all the candle lights in the windows, a look I love and one that makes me happy each and every time I arrive home. I usually keep these lights up until at least March, never wanting to throw the house back into darkness. My kids use to hate having the lights in their bedrooms, the struggle was real as they would unplug them every night and I would plug them back in each day. As I placed them into each bedroom window, I was pleased that they will remain on with no one working against me. I didn't get much farther with my decorating plans, but at least most of it is inside so I can chip away at it throughout the week. Tim had been bellyaching to our friends about not having enough space here and there, so I had him busy cleaning out his bathroom closet. Once he cleaned out the things he didn't need or use, the shelves were open for all his belongings and organized just the way he wanted them. Imagine how happy he'll be when I have him help clean out the shed? Of course, I now have a pile of toiletries he didn't want in the middle of our family room floor, to find a place for or throw away. I'll have to put on a Christmas show and go through the mess. After all, I won't be able to decorate the family room until the new mess is gone, that will give me inspiration to get it all picked up top speed. I'll be putting up my tree this week, going with my artificial tree since I want it up so early. I might buy a real tiny tabletop tree for the scent but my fake tree is just so darn easy so it wins for this year. I broke from decorating to pick up my mom and drive to Westerly to thrift shop a bit, each of us finding a fantastic item or two...or in my case six or seven. I bought beautiful candle stick holders, three glass and two tall wooden pillars. I don't love the wooden vibe, but plan on spray painting them either silver or gold, transforming them into the perfect holiday pieces...I'll be sure to post before and afters! I also bought a fabulous vase, ok, two vases but they were so pretty I couldn't resist. Just as we were leaving my mom spotted the most amazing felt wool stockings...just what I had been looking for. I filled my cart with a 5 pretty antique plates, a pair of pants, 2 vases, 5 candle stick holders, 2 stockings and a few other items for a whopping total of $32 ...not bad. I'm not sure why everyone doesn't thrift shop, but I'm glad they don't. Christmas items at thrift shops are a dime a dozen and it's where you find the most unique items and so fun to look through. Rolling into my favorite holiday season, lights, glitter & cheer... I might even wish for snow.
