Day 918 Valuable Resource

While it may still be winter, there’s a noticeable shift happening in the days: the sunsets are getting later with each passing evening. More daylight means more than just a happier me—it also means a boost in egg production. Tim gathered nine eggs, we’ve been consistently collecting 5-7 eggs every day so we were pleased with the increase in production.

Chickens, it seems, are excellent indicators of spring’s approach. As the days grow longer, we see more and more eggs. My daughter, who stopped by for a visit, was thrilled to take a dozen eggs. She mentioned she’s been paying $6 per dozen at the store, but that price just jumped to $10! It’s nice to know that my girls are providing such a valuable resource.

Once all of my hens start laying again, I’ll be collecting about 15-18 eggs per day. Not bad at all for a small flock!

I still need to connect with my house and pet sitter. We only had a quick chat when I returned, but I’m looking forward to hearing how things went while I was away. I was fortunate to find someone willing to care for my chickens. While Peps, is easy to look after—everyone loves caring for a cat—finding someone who’s willing to take care of chickens is a bit more challenging.

I don’t mind stepping outside each morning to greet my girls with treats and fresh water, but not everyone enjoys those chilly, early-morning chores. Gathering eggs in the afternoon isn’t difficult, but timing is important. You have to do it before sundown and before all the hens have roosted. At this time of year, if the eggs aren’t collected daily, they can freeze and crack.

When I returned home from vacation, I found my flock of hens—and my cat—happy and healthy. Now, I just need to invite my pet sitter, Joy, over for dinner to catch up on the daily happenings I missed while I was gone, other than a few snowstorms!

Looking after my pets and home has its perks, for sure—especially when it comes to the fresh eggs. All the eggs you can eat, as long as you collect them!
