Day 932 Legacy

Dotti was shining down on her family during her services, no doubt with a big smile. Her service was beautiful, followed by a luncheon where her boys gave the most amazing speeches in her honor. Listening to the love and adoration they held for their mother was palpable, and certainly deserved. They shared memories of their childhood, and each of the four kids highlighted a few standout moments, along with private family photos. Cards had been placed on each table for guests to write and share their own memories of Dotti—a truly beautiful idea.

I struggled to select just one memory; my mind was filled with a lifetime's worth, but I managed to limit my thoughts to two cards and asked the bartender for a stapler so I could attach them. I hope that once things settle down, her family will enjoy reading how much everyone in the universe loved Dotti.

As I stood chatting with her kids, it was clear they are now in a club that none of us want to be in—the club of those who have lost one or both of their parents. They were shocked to hear that this week marks the 10th anniversary of my dad's passing—amazing how time flies! I reassured them that in time, they will look back and be thankful that their children were fortunate enough to have known their mom so well and had so many years together.

I am eternally grateful that my kids remember my dad so well, can laugh, and tell stories about him without needing me to recount them. Dotti's grandkids all knew how much they were loved and had time to connect with her to build their own memories. Dotti's granddaughter had little cards made and packaged them with beautiful charms to hand out to each person in attendance—something Dotti herself would have done.

To spend the day feeling such love and connection was a blessing. We are all better humans for having known Dotti, and I know her legacy will continue to inspire and unite us all.
