Day 989 Deck Days

The weather is finally warm enough to sit outside and enjoy deck life... with a blanket... but still. The afternoon sunshine feels so darn nice after a winter of darkness by 4:30. The extended daylight almost gives me enough energy to get things done during the evening hours—almost, that is.

Once my face feels the warm rays of sunshine, I can't resist closing my eyes and soaking up every minute of it. No wonder I'm such a beach gal. Us sun-seekers just can’t get enough. There's still a chill in the air, but wrapped in a warm blanket to break the wind, it was perfection.

Sitting outside on my deck, eyes closed, listening to the birds chirping away—you'd never know my house is right in the middle of town. My backyard feels completely secluded, and from my deck, I look out onto the yard, the river, and of course, my chickens.

The chicken coop is a bit of an eyesore, but from my girls’ perspective, it’s perfect—and that’s what matters. They have plenty of space to roam, perches to fly up to, and areas to explore. No wonder I get such an abundance of eggs; happy, healthy hens lay lots of them. I’m currently gathering 13–15 eggs a day, and I have a few regulars who buy dozens from me each week.

Honestly, I'm pretty proud of myself for not buying any new chicks... yet. Replenishing the flock is important, but I’m thinking I should probably take a year off. (Ask me again the next time I see fluffy little puffballs at the feed store!)

For now, I’m just soaking up the sunshine, listening to the birds, and feeling grateful for these slow, quiet moments that make all the chaos worth it. Here's to more deck days, happy hens, and the first taste of spring.
