Day 1076 Birthday wishes
We had such a fun time celebrating Rick’s birthday. Rick is Missy’s boyfriend—although they’ve been living together for years and years, so calling him a “boyfriend” seems a bit silly. It’s funny how you can share a life with someone for what feels like forever, but if you haven’t tied the knot, it suddenly becomes tricky to know how to introduce them.
They’ve joked about getting married, and I’m pretty sure that if Missy ever gave the green light, Rick would be sprinting to the altar. When you’re older and not planning a family, the urgency fades a little. Tim and I dated for eleven years before finally saying our “I do’s.” Now that we’ve been married for almost four years, I will say—it does make a difference.
At sixty, I’m not sure I’d want a boyfriend. There’s a quiet kind of peace that comes with the security of marriage. Growing old together feels a little softer, a little more certain. I couldn’t have picked a better spouse—even if he doesn’t load the dishwasher correctly, avoids laundry, skips yard work, and frankly doesn’t do much around the house. But he makes me laugh, tries his best to make me happy, and appreciates all my quirks (not that I have many, of course!).
Rick is turning seventy this week. He has two beautiful grown daughters, a couple of grandkids, and of course, he has my Melissa by his side, always. He’s a solid guy—one of the kindest you could ever meet. So if Missy ever does say yes, I truly believe she couldn’t find a better guy!
Oh, how I’d love to see them make it official… just saying!
Here’s to love at every stage of life, and to the quiet joy of finding your person—wedding bells and happiness. Happy birthday, Rick!
