Day 1077 Camouflage

After a hectic week, a quiet Friday night was just what I needed. I met up with my mother, sister, niece, and good friend, Kathy for dinner at Two Ten Oyster Bar—arguably one of the best waterfront spots in South County. We sat chatting and savoring delicious food while looking out over Salt Pond, watching boats glide by and enjoying the soft breeze coming off the water.

As they arrived, I couldn’t help but tease them—three of them walked in dressed in black. Ugh… why?! I’ll never quite understand why so many women lean so heavily on black. It’s summertime—why not embrace color? Sure, I’ll wear a black dress now and then, but as we age, black can feel a bit harsh. Navy blue is often a softer, more flattering option for us “old gals.” I was relieved to see my mom show up in a lovely shade of blue—phew! And Kathy had a good excuse for her black ensemble: she was highlighting a bold orange coral necklace, which I had to admit looked fantastic.

Somewhere along the way in fashion history, the “little black dress” became a staple. And sure, it has its place—preferably paired with pearls for a fancy evening out. But I sometimes wonder if all that black is a kind of camouflage, a way to blend in quietly at every function.

While I’m at it, I’ll poke fun at myself too—white pants! Every time I put them on, I’m reminded that I’ve officially joined the senior fashion league. But I must say, the outfit served as the perfect backdrop for my gorgeous bag, which absolutely deserved the spotlight.

Ah, the ever-evolving world of fashion do’s and don’ts. In the end, I think we should all wear what lifts our spirits. For me, that’s bright colors and the occasional navy. For others, it may always be black—and that’s okay too.

Regardless of our outfit choices, the dinner was delightful, and I was grateful to be home early, tucked into bed, and easing into the weekend slowly and peacefully. Sometimes, it’s the quiet nights with good food and even better company that bring the most joy.
