Day 2147 Game Night

Mahjong… if you know your Mahjong, you’ll know this is an old photo, 2024 card and all. With a new phone update, I was unable to upload a recent photo, so I had to scour my old files for one that made sense. Now I’ve got my work cut out for me trying to figure out what the update changed… ugh.

That said, it was a fun night teaching my friends Mahjong...finally! I had eight gals over, and they paired up, focused, listened, learned all the rules, and even played a couple of games. They all did really well. Some I can already tell will love it more than others, but everyone grasped the basic concepts, and everyone loved it.

Mahjong has become increasingly popular, and lessons are popping up everywhere with some pretty hefty price tags. I’m thrilled to teach my own crew and, hopefully, build in a regular game night group. It’s not exactly a game that lends itself to food, drinks, or much chatter, so we may need a half hour beforehand to snack and socialize before the tiles come out.

I’ve ordered my new 2026 card and am already anxious to play it. The new cards arrive sometime in April, .... I still don’t understand why they don’t manage to get them out in January… but I don’t make the Mahjong rules. I’m guessing next week I’ll have a few more beginners to teach and may need to set up a couple of extra tables, so fun!

Tim may even need to dazzle the crew one of these nights and flex his Mahjong skills… yes, he plays. I still can’t quite figure out why Mahjong has become so female-dominated in our country, but it clearly has.

At least my game-night crew isn’t too loud. My poor basement cat must be wondering if she’ll ever get a quiet week. I’ll be moving her food closer to the basement doorway, encouraging her to come out a bit more, easing her into it if I can, while trying my best not to freak her out.

It was a fun night of tiles, teaching, and good friends, my kinda night. I'm already looking forward to our next game night but i'm sure the cat is looking forward to more quiet time.
