Rescued

I almost couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this sad little plant withering away inside a thrift store, its pot marked for sale. That $2 purchase saved this poor little heartleaf philodendron from a certain demise. I'm not sure if they thought it was an artificial plant or simply didn't care, but either way, I knew it had to come home with me if it had any chance of survival.

I've nourished this little plant with love, light, and fresh soil, and I've loved watching it slowly come back to life. New deep-green leaves are emerging, and with each one, it seems a little stronger.

I really want to know the story behind how a living plant ended up in a thrift store bin. Did someone move away? Pass away? Simply run out of room for this tiny little plant? Or was it just an oversight? I'd like to think it was some kind of mishap, because after all, it was alive inside that little clay pot and certainly deserved a chance at survival.

So I guess that's what I do, with plants and with cats. I give them the second chance they deserve. And just like this little plant, our sweet basement cat has been thriving in her new environment, making slow but steady progress each day, relaxing a little more and enjoying the life of a house cat after leaving the mean streets behind her.

Maybe there's something especially rewarding about rescuing little things, or creatures, that others have given up on. Sometimes all they need is a little love, patience, and a safe place to grow.

I haven't been thrifting as much these days, but I may just need to go see if there's another little treasure out there waiting to be rescued....or maybe a visit to the animal rescue soon???
