My Colorful Disaster
Let's chat nails for a moment… What the heck?!
Sure, I love how pretty freshly manicured and polished nails look, but I've never been able to achieve that look myself. I consider myself pretty good at a variety of things, skilled even, but when it comes to painting my nails, that particular skill continues to elude me. Those precise little strokes of color, neatly applied with delicate care, are apparently beyond my capabilities… and Lord knows I've tried!
Every time I reach for a bottle of nail polish, I convince myself that this time will be different. Surely, I can manage to swipe a little color across my nails without making a complete mess of things. And every single time, I end up with nails that look as though a five-year-old got hold of the applicator and somehow managed to get more polish on the skin surrounding the nails than on the nails themselves. It's not pretty, folks. Not pretty at all!
So, the other day, as I was getting ready for the wedding, I foolishly convinced myself that perhaps I'd finally mastered this seemingly simple task. I mean, how hard could it be? I'm 61 years old, for goodness' sake! Surely, by now, I should be able to paint my own nails.
Well, I quickly realized I was in way over my head.
With time running out, I made a mad dash to the nail salon, hoping they'd be able to squeeze me in. Thankfully, they did, and I was in and out in a flash. The nail technician worked her magic, applying the polish with the precision of a wizard. Not a smudge, not a streak, not a drop of color where it didn't belong. My nails looked absolutely perfect for the wedding!
And then, within 24 hours, it all went awry. At least six of my ten nails are now chipped and looking like they've been through a battle. So much for that freshly manicured perfection!
I suppose I shouldn't complain. They looked lovely for the wedding, and really, isn't that what mattered? I got my moment with pretty nails, even if it was a short-lived romance.
My daughter, on the other hand, happens to be one of those nail-painting wizards. You know the type. She can apply polish beautifully, without getting it all over her fingers, and she even has some magical polish that's supposed to last up to two weeks. Two weeks! Can you imagine?
She's painted my nails with her special potion before, and much to my surprise, it actually lasted about five days on me. FIVE DAYS! That's practically a personal record. Clearly, she has access to some sort of sorcery that the rest of us mere mortals can only dream about.
So, at 61 years old, I'm finally coming to terms with a few important realities:
I cannot paint my own nails. And apparently, no amount of practice, positive thinking, or delusional optimism is going to change that.
Even the prettiest polish has a very short shelf life when it comes to my nails.
Sometimes, it's worth having them done anyway, even if the results are fleeting.
Because here's the thing: not everything has to last forever to be worth enjoying. Sometimes, a little bit of pretty, a little pampering, and a few hours of feeling put together are enough. We don't always have to master every little thing ourselves, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with calling in a professional when we know we're out of our depth!
So I'll keep admiring those perfectly polished nails, keep letting the experts work their magic when the occasion calls for it, and keep accepting that my own attempts are likely to end in a colorful disaster.
And as for my daughter? Well, there's no denying it… she's a wizard!
